AKRON The University of Akron Law School inadvertently released confidential information in an e-mail sent Tuesday to law students.

Included in the e-mail was each law student's name and grade-point average, which would indicate class rank.

Richard Aynes, the law school dean, said the release was a clerical error. The school previously has released grade-point rankings without the names attached.

Aynes said that after the mistake was discovered, law school employees were able to recall some of the messages.

Additionally, the school sent a separate e-mail requesting that students delete the confidential information.

``We deeply regret that any information was revealed,'' Aynes said.

Jim Bradshaw, a U.S. Department of Education spokesman, said, in general, under the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, confidential information is only to be released with a student's written permission.
